Amelia Earhardt was not, going against common belief, a good pilot. She and/or her navigator messed up, ran out of gas and crash into the ocean. Nothing that hundreds of other pilots, good and bad, have not done.

Amelia was a brave lady who was obsessed with the idea that a woman could do anything a man could do. But, no one, man or woman had attempted the flight she atempted–flying around the world with just a navigator, the shoddy communication equipment of the day, and no knowledge of morse code. The flight was doomed to fail, a belief held by many. Also, the flight was a publicity stunt, that both she and Noonan thought would make them a lot of money. The fake publicity that the ship was a flying laboratory was simply not true. Amelia’s husband, George Putnam loved his wife but probably loved fame more.
None the less, Amelia is my lady hero, and somewhere below the Pacific, fairly close to Howland Island lies her plane. Scientists say it should be well preserved. I hope they find it some day and bring it home. It will be like bringing Amelia home.
