Neo Politicus covers a lot of ground in his rambling post, but doesn't connect the dots. How exactly is the death toll of the Iran-Iraq war the result of "sick liberal hypocrisy" when the war was started by Iraq, not Iran, and prosecuted with the tacit support of the government of the United States of America -- a government led by Ronald Reagan?
The current regime -- as bad as it is in many respects, and it really is pretty bad -- is still, from the viewpoint of the average Iranian, a vast imporvement over that of the Shah. As intolerant as the current regime is of dissent, as arbitrary as its justice seems, as harsh as its prisons are, as cruel as its security forces behave, in all these respects the Shah's regime was worse, much worse. At the height of the most recent protests in Tehran no voices were raised against the Islamic Republic, no voices called for return of the Shah, no voices lamented the revolution. Instead they simply called for the government to deliver on the promise of that revolution.
To call the Shah "the only hope generations of Iranians had or will have for better lives" is to turn the concept of hope into some grotesque Orwellian slogan. Torture is hope! Death squads are hope! The Savak is hope!

More sick liberal hypocrisy. A million Iranians dead in a war with Iraq. 65 Million living - and dying - under an insane theocracy. 2,000 American soldiers murdered by Iranian-backed terrorists and Iranian agents in Iraq.

It's pathetic dweebs like you that owe an apology to Iranians - and all humanity - for letting the Shah and the only hope generations of Iranians had or will have for better lives - be deposed.

The 21st century is going to be the beginning of a new dark age because of people like you you. You deserve it. Unfortunately it's your children that are going to suffer it.

Given this sordid history, the Persian people have every reason to be wary of American (government) intentions. In spite of this, many (if not most) of them still bear great affection for America & Americans. We owe the people of Iran an apology.

However, the Islamic Government of Iran has proven by the barbarity of their actions both past & present that they can never be trusted by civilized nations. The U.S should never, under any circumstances, have any type of relationship with that government.
