The big day is tomorrow in Iran (Feb 11, 2010). Both sides are rallying their forces for big protests both pro- and anti- government. Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei upped the ante by stating “The Iranian nation, with its unity and God’s grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman (February 11) in a way that will leave them stunned.” No one is sure what this cryptic statement means.
Keep your eye on Tehran tomorrow. Anyone speculate on what his big punch might be?

Since he said shortly after this that the anti-government protesters were “not of this nation,” and has repeatedly said they were agents of the “arrogant powers,” I’d suppose this is a not-very-veiled threat against the Green Movement, which I think he clearly sees as an in-country surrogate for his foreign opponents. If there really are over a million (I’ve even heard the number 3 million) anti-government protesters out on Thursday, and the government panics, things could get very ugly.

So far, nothing unexpected from the big rallies. The government outplayed the opposition by swarming the capital with soldiers and police – shutting down any hope of large anti-government protests. Near total media blackout outside the main pro-government event, so we may never know what happened beyond the cameras.
