North Korea presents China with special problems. On the one hand, North Korea’s intense anti-Americanism limits U.S. influence in China’s sphere, but on the other hand North Korea is, well, North Korea – and it is on China’s border. That’s the Asian equivalent of the next-door neighbor with a yard full of cars on cinderblocks; the neighbor who is likely to blast “Freebird” or a fire off a shotgun while you’re trying to sleep. You never know what’s coming next. China’s prime minister visited North Korea this week to see if he could hide some of the shotgun shells or at least take the volume knob off the stereo.

About the Author: I regard historic research as a never-ending Easter egg hunt: You never know where you'll find a hidden treasure. Growing up with parents who told stories of family history probably had a lot to do with that. I realized early on that history is about lives already lived. I've met war veterans, early aviators, friends of Abraham Lincoln's in-laws, and a host of others who shared their histories with me – and it was never boring!
