Steven Pressfield, author of several gripping historic novels that include “Gates of Fire” and “Killing Rommel,” has just debuted a nonfiction online series about Afghanistan that he describes as “a mini-series on tribalism.” The series includes a multipart interview with Afghan Tribal Chief Ajmal Khan Zazai and five videos that begin with “It’s the Tribes, Stupid,” and continue through “How to Win in Afghanistan.” As Tracey MacCormick noted in a recent GreatHistory blog, the latter is a massive challenge that doesn’t have history on its side.
Next week, on Sept. 29, Pressfield will begin serializing Special Forces Major Jim Gant’s white paper, “One Tribe At A Time.”
Pressfield states on his Website, “I’m not doing this for money or politics. I’m a Marine and I don’t want young Marines and soldiers going into harm’s way without the full arsenal of history and context.”
About the Author: I regard historic research as a never-ending Easter egg hunt: You never know where you'll find a hidden treasure. Growing up with parents who told stories of family history probably had a lot to do with that. I realized early on that history is about lives already lived. I've met war veterans, early aviators, friends of Abraham Lincoln's in-laws, and a host of others who shared their histories with me – and it was never boring!
