Barely a year ago this would have been unthinkable – States considering leaving the Union. In fact, even today I don’t know of any serious movements to have states detach from the United States, but what would it take?
The recent health care debate has found traction with a lot of otherwise politically indifferent people – and it is possible it could get a lot more heated. Because of the rhetoric from all sides, many now see this as a battle between Big Brother and ordinary freedom loving citizens. Consider a recent statement from the Democratic leadership stating they are considering an end-run around Republicans by using a procedural tactic called Reconciliation to get their reforms through with a simple 51 vote majority. It is dangerous because it also means they are doing an end-run around the American people, who are more and more against the idea. Several pro-healthcare legislators have publicly stated they will vote for it, despite clear opposition from their constituents. Calls of Big Brother knows best follow… Is it possible that states-rights will come even more to the fore in the coming years as a result? Will we see traditional independents like Texas becoming even more vociferous about Federal intrusion as our nation goes further and further into the red? Could any state survive on its own?
Along these lines, I found this map showing separatists movements across the globe. Maybe we will see more US states on the map soon?
More about States Rights.
More about US Congressional Reconciliation. I had never heard of this.
